Re-Burial

As the Cause for canonisation is pursued the Church requires that the grave of the person concerned be opened to examine the remains in a formal ceremony.

For Archbishop Romero this happened on 11th March 2005 just prior to the 25th anniversary celebrations. Whilst his body was not incorrupt the remains were clearly of Oscar Romero. The original metal coffin, visible in the funeral photographs, was re-sealed, painted, placed inside a larger wooden coffin and buried in the new location in the crypt which had been prepared. The grave was then sealed. A new memorial sculpture showing Romero lying between the four Evangelists was subsequently put in place.

Below are a selection of pictures of the re-burial.
